What is ability?

Ability is about what someone **can or cannot do**.

We use the modal verb **can** to talk about **ability** (what someone is able to do).

## 2\\. Using “can” for ability

### 2.1 Positive form

**Subject + can + base verb + rest of the sentence**

**Examples:**

* I can ride a bike.
* He can read a book.
* She can run fast.

**Key point:** After **can**, we always use the **base form of the verb** (no -s, -ing, or to).

### 2.2 Negative form

**Subject + cannot / can’t + base verb**

**Examples:**

* I cannot (can’t) drive a car.
* She cannot (can’t) speak French.
* We can’t go to the park today.

**Tip:** “Can’t” is the short form of “cannot” and is used very often in speaking. In ability statements, we usually write **cannot** as one word (not *can not*).

## 3\\. Questions with can

**Structure:**
**Can + subject + base verb?**

**Examples:**

* Can you swim? → Yes, I can. / No, I can’t.
* Can he play football? → Yes, he can. / No, he can’t.
* Can they come to the party? → Yes, they can. / No, they can’t.

**Tip:** Short answers are common and correct. Always match **can / can’t**.

## 4\\. General ability

* Use **can** for ability (in general or at the moment).
* Use **can’t / cannot** for no ability (in general or at the moment).

**Examples:**

* I can speak English. (general ability)
* I can’t drive. (no ability)
* I can’t talk now. (no ability at the moment)

## 5\\. Talking about others’ ability

### Positive examples

* He can cook very well.
* She can dance.
* My friends can play the guitar.

### Negative examples

* He can’t sing.
* She can’t swim.
* My friends can’t drive.

## 6\\. Quick memory tips

* **Can** = able to do something
* **Can’t** = not able to do something
* Always use the **base verb** after can/can’t
* For questions: **Can + subject + verb?**
* Do not use **do and does** with **can**.","en","A1",29,[12
"019aede0-3d70-76c6-aa71-e9c09300d485","Can / Can't (Ability)",false,0,2,[19
"019e4e8e-bbb9-7473-8de2-6354718b8989","/api/grammar_topics/019aede0-3d70-76c6-aa71-e9c09300d485",20.5,[24
"019e4e8f-0881-7d73-91b8-d851ac420bf3
"019b850c-a402-7aca-be1e-5bc68ed2432f","can",9,"tts_3e0f83748dd26434_en-US.mp3",[32,39,44
"019b8518-d646-7a8f-a705-088eaf0f45d3","NOUN","A container, typically cylindrical, used for storing liquids or food.","I opened a can of soup for dinner.
The can was made of aluminum.",true,1
"019b8518-d647-7eef-9862-9680a8f1b269","VERB","To be able to; have the ability to.","I can swim very well.
Can you help me with this problem?
"019b8518-d647-7f3b-9862-9680a9eff156","To preserve food in a sealed container.","We can vegetables to enjoy them all year.
She learned how to can fruit during the summer.","/uploads/audio/tts_3e0f83748dd26434_en-US.mp3","2025-12-26T16:47:35+00:00","2026-07-14T17:37:38+00:00",[52],"grammar_exercise_questions_modality",[],"/uploads/images/og_019b5b8e-fb65-77bc-beaa-37f96f269a73.jpg?v=1784050658",[56,63],{"@id":57,"@type":58
"/api/grammar_exercises/019d208a-9cf9-713d-88e8-5708529248ff","GrammarExercise","019d208a-9cf9-713d-88e8-5708529248ff","/api/grammar_pages/019b5b8e-fb65-77bc-beaa-37f96f269a73","Ability in Daily Life","Fill in the blanks with the correct form of 'can' or 'can't' to express everyday abilities.
