What Are Possessive Adjectives?\n\nPossessive adjectives show **who or what something belongs to**. They always go **before a noun**. The form of the possessive adjective never changes — it stays the same whether the noun is singular or plural, and it does not change to match the gender of the noun.\n\nThe possessive adjectives in English are:\n\n* **my**\n* **your**\n* **his**\n* **her**\n* **its**\n* **our**\n* **their**\n\n:::example\n**my** book\n\n**your** car\n\n**their** house\n:::\n\n## 2. Common Possessive Adjectives and How to Use Them\n\n* **my** – something belongs to **me**\n * :::example\n This is **my** book.\n :::\n* **your** – something belongs to **you** (one person or more than one person)\n * :::example\n * Singular: Is this **your** bag? *(talking to one person)*\n * Plural: Please open **your** books. *(talking to a group)*\n :::\n Note: English uses the same word **your** for one person and for a group — only the noun changes, not the possessive adjective.\n* **his** – something belongs to **a man or boy** (a male owner)\n * :::example\n That is **his** jacket.\n :::\n* **her** – something belongs to **a woman or a girl** (a female owner)\n * :::example\n This is **her** phone.\n :::\n* **its** – something belongs to **a thing or animal**\n * :::example\n The dog is wagging **its** tail.\n :::\n :::alert\n **its** (no apostrophe) is the possessive adjective. **it's** (with apostrophe) means *it is* — these are different words.\n :::\n :::tip\n We never use **its** for a person — even if we do not know their name. Use **his**, **her**, or **their** for people.\n :::\n* **our** – something belongs to **us**\n * :::example\n This is **our** house.\n :::\n* **their** – something belongs to **them**\n * :::example\n Those are **their** shoes.\n :::\n\nTwo of these adjectives need a little extra attention: **his** and **her** depend on the gender of the owner.\n\n### His or Her? Choose by the Owner's Gender\n\nThe owner's gender matters for **his** and **her**:\n\n:::example\nTom has a bag. → It is **his** bag. *(owner = male)*\n:::\n:::example\nSara has a bag. → It is **her** bag. *(owner = female)*\n:::\n\n:::warning\nDo NOT change **his** or **her** to match the noun — change it to match the owner.\n\n✗ Tom has a sister. → That is **her** sister. *(wrong — Tom is male, so use **his**, not **her**. The word 'sister' is female, but that does not matter.)*\n✓ Tom has a sister. → That is **his** sister. *(correct — **his** matches Tom, the owner)*\n:::\n\n## 3.
