Another, Other, Others, The Other
1. Overview
We use another, other, others, the other, and the others to talk about additional or different people and things.
| Form | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| another | one more / a different one | another coffee |
| other + noun | additional or different things | other ideas |
| others | other people or things (noun omitted) | Some students are here. Others are late. |
| the other | the specific remaining one | One is red, the other is blue. |
| the others | the rest of a specific group | Some students are here. The others are late. |
2. Using "Another" (One More / One Different)
We usually use another with a singular countable noun.
Structure:
- another + singular countable noun
Examples:
- "Can I have another coffee?"
- "She bought another dress."
- "Let's try another restaurant."
Key Point: One More or One Different
We use another when we mean one more or a different one.
Another with Numbers and Amounts
We can also use another with quantities.
Structure:
- another + number + plural noun
- another + amount + uncountable noun
Examples:
- "We need another two days to finish the project."
- "The meeting lasted another three hours."
- "Add another 100 grams of sugar."
3. Using "Other" (More / Different Things)
We use other before nouns.
Structure:
- other + plural noun
- other + uncountable noun
Examples:
- "I have other ideas."
- "Do you have other questions?"
- "Do you have other music I can listen to?"
(Note: with uncountable nouns, "other" is less common in everyday speech; "more" or "different" is often more natural, e.g. "We need more information.")
Key Point: General Additional Things
We use other when we talk about additional or different people or things in general.
4. Using "Others" (No Noun)
We use others without a noun because the noun is already understood from the context.
Structure:
- others + plural verb
- many/some/most + others
You can add a quantifier before "others" to give more detail about how many: "Some others disagreed." / "Most others were happy." / "Many others joined later."
Examples:
- "Some students are here, but others are late."
- "Some people like coffee, while others prefer tea."
- "Many others agreed with the idea."
Key Point: Omitting the Noun
The noun is already known, so we do not repeat it.
5. Using "The Other" (The Specific Remaining One)
We use the other when we talk about a specific remaining person or thing.
Simple Rule
- the other = one specific remaining thing or person
- the others = all remaining things or people
One of Two
Examples:
- "I have two bags. One is black, and the other is brown."
- "She has two children. One is 10, and the other is 8."
- "I like this shoe, but the other one is more comfortable."
More Than Two
When there are more than two options, the other one means one specific remaining option, not all the rest.
Remember: when there are more than two things, use "the other one" for one specific remaining item and "the others" for all remaining items.
Examples:
- "There are three cakes on the table. This cake is nice, but the other one with chocolate is better."
- "I tried on three shirts. I like this one, but the other one (the blue one) is cheaper."
Key Point: Specific and Known
We use the other when everyone knows which specific person or thing we mean.
6. Using "The Others" (The Rest of a Specific Group)
We use the others when we mean all the remaining people or things in a specific group.
Structure:
- the others + plural verb
Examples:
- "Some students are here. The others are late."
- "I invited ten friends. Five came, but the others couldn't come."
- "There are four cakes. I like this one, but the others are too sweet."
Key Point: All Remaining Items
The noun is already understood, so we do not repeat it.
7. Other Forms with "The"
The Other + Singular Noun
Examples:
- "The other child is waiting outside."
- "Where is the other shoe?"
The Other + Plural Noun
We use the other + plural noun to mean the remaining people or things in a specific group.
Examples:
- "Some students are here. The other students are late."
- "Two books are on the table. The other books are on the shelf."
Noun Included vs. Noun Omitted
- "The other students are late." (noun included)
- "The others are late." (noun omitted)
Both mean the same thing.
8. Summary Table
| Situation | Correct Form |
|---|---|
| One more coffee | another |
| One more dress | another |
| More ideas | other |
| More information | other |
| Other people (no noun) | others |
| The second of two | the other |
| The rest of a group | the others |
