Another, Other, Others, The Other

1. Overview (Quick Idea)

  • another + noun → an additional one; also used with numbers/amounts: another two days, another 100 grams
  • other + noun → additional/different (general): other ideas, other information
  • the other → the specific other one (often the second of two: one … the other …; with more than two: one specific other one)
  • others → other ones (no noun; the noun is clear from context)
  • the others → the rest of a specific group (no noun)

2. Using “another” (One More / One Different)

We usually use another with a singular countable noun (another coffee). Use another for one more / a different one (singular); use other for plural or uncountable nouns. We can also use it with quantities:

another + number/few + plural noun (e.g., another two days, another few minutes)

Another few minutes is possible; a few more minutes is also very common and often clearer.

another + amount + uncountable noun (e.g., another 100 grams of flour, another ten dollars)

Structure:

  • another + singular countable noun

Examples:

  • “Can I have another coffee?”
  • “She bought another dress.”
  • “Let’s try another restaurant.”

Note

We are talking about one more or a different one.

3. Using “other” (More / Different Things)

We use other before nouns (plural or uncountable).

Structure:

  • other + plural noun
  • other + uncountable noun

Examples:

  • “I have other ideas.”
  • “Do you have other questions?”
  • “We need other information.”

Note

When there is no noun, we often use others/the others (plural): "Some students are here, but others are late." For singular, we often use (the) other as a pronoun: "This one is too big—I'll take the other." We use other without a noun mainly in fixed patterns like some/any/no + other(s) and other than ….

4. Using “others” (No Noun)

We use others without a noun to mean other + plural countable noun (the noun is understood from context).

Structure:

  • others + plural verb (Others are …)
  • some/most/many + others (Many others left.)
  • the others + plural verb (The others are …)

Examples:

  • “Some students are here, but others are late.”
  • “I baked five cakes. I like this one, but the others are better.”

Note

The noun is already known, so we don’t repeat it.

5. Using “the other” (The Specific One)

Remember: other = general/additional.

The other = the specific remaining other one; the others = the rest of a specific group.

We use the other when we talk about a specific remaining thing or person.

Structure:

  • the other + singular or plural noun / the others = the rest of a specific group (you both know which group)
  • other + plural noun = additional/different in general

Note

If you mean ‘all the remaining items’ in a known group, we usually say the others / the other + plural noun: "There are three cakes. This one is nice; the others are too sweet."

5.1 One of Two

Examples:

  • “I have two bags. One is black, and the other is brown.”
  • “She has two children. One is 10, and the other is 8.”

5.2 Specific Remaining One (More Than Two – Context)

With more than two, the other (one) means one specific other item, not ‘all the rest’. For ‘all the remaining ones’, use the others / the other + plural noun.

Examples:

  • “There are three cakes on the table. This cake is nice, but the other one with chocolate is better.”
  • “I tried on three shirts. I like this one, but the other one (the blue one) is cheaper.”

Reminder

We are talking about a specific known option.

6. Other Forms with “the” (Specific Remaining)

6.1 The Other + Plural Noun

Examples:

  • “Some students are here. The other students are late.”

6.2 The Others (No Noun)

Examples:

  • “Some students are here. The others are late.”

7. Summary Table (Simple View)

  • another → an additional one; also with numbers/amounts
  • other + noun → additional/different (plural or uncountable)
  • others → pronoun (no noun)
  • the other → the specific remaining other one (often in a set of two)
  • the others → the rest of a specific group (no noun)

Use another for one more, other with nouns, others without nouns, and the other(s) for specific remaining people or things.
