Definite article (the)
1. What is the definite article (the)?
The is a word we use to talk about specific people or things.
- Use the when the speaker and listener know which person or thing we mean.
Examples:
- the cat in the garden
- the book on the desk
- the school near my house
2. Form
Structure: the + noun (e.g. the car) / the + adjective + noun (e.g. the red car)
We choose the (not a/an) when we mean one specific thing.
Examples:
- the sun
- the car outside our house
- the teacher in my English class
Sentences:
- The red book on the table is mine.
- She is talking to the teacher.
- I saw the dog in the garden.
3. When do we use “the”?
We use the in these common situations when we talk about a specific person, place, or thing.
Rule: Use the when it is clear which one we mean (both people know the same thing).
3.1 Something specific
- I want to eat the apple you gave me.
3.2 Mentioned before
- I saw a cat. The cat was black.
3.3 Unique things
- the sun, the moon, the Earth
3.4 With superlatives
We use the before superlatives because we talk about one thing at the highest level.
- She is the tallest girl in the class.
- This is the most interesting movie.
3.5 A specific place
We use the with places when we add information that identifies the place.
- Let's meet at the park near my house.
- She is at the cinema near the station.
- We are going to the restaurant on King Street.
4. Important notes
- Do not use the with general plural nouns or uncountable nouns when talking generally:
- I like cats. (general)
- I like the cats in my street. (specific)
- I like music. (general)
- I like the music in this café. (specific)
