Superlatives (quantity: most / least / fewest)

1. What Are Superlatives?

In previous lessons, we learned superlatives with adjectives:

  • tall → the tallest
  • expensive → the most expensive

We use these to compare qualities (how something is). Now we also use superlatives to talk about quantity (how much / how many).

Here, most/least/fewest are quantity words that go before a noun (not adjective forms like 'tallest').

2. Adjective Superlatives (Review)

We already use superlatives with adjectives for quality (e.g., the tallest, the most expensive). Now we’ll use most/least/fewest with nouns for quantity.

Example: the most expensive restaurantthe most customers

3. Superlatives with Quantity

Now we focus on amount and number, not quality.

The most

Form: the most + noun
Meaning: the largest amount or number
Examples: the most water / the most students / the most money

Sentences:

She drinks the most water.
This class has the most students.
He has the most money.

The least

Form: the least + noun
Meaning: the smallest amount (usually with uncountable nouns). With plural countable nouns, we usually say the fewest, but the least + plural noun is also possible in some contexts (e.g., 'the least problems').
Examples: the least water / the least time / the least money

Sentences:

She drinks the least water.
I have the least time today.
This job pays the least.

The fewest

Form: the fewest + plural noun
Meaning: the smallest number (countable nouns)
Examples: the fewest students / the fewest apples / the fewest mistakes

Sentences:

This class has the fewest students.
He made the fewest mistakes.
They bought the fewest apples.

4. Key Difference (Very Important)

  • Adjective superlatives → describe quality (the best, the biggest, the fastest)
  • Quantity superlatives → describe amount/number (the most, the least, the fewest)

Examples:

  • This is the best restaurant. (quality)
  • This restaurant has the most customers. (quantity)

5. Word Order (Very Important)

Common patterns:

  • the + adjective superlative
  • the most + noun
  • the least + noun
  • the fewest + plural noun

6. Common Examples

Examples:

  • This is the most popular place.
  • She has the most books.
  • He has the least money.
  • They made the fewest errors.

7. Easy Tip to Remember

Quality → adjective (the biggest).

Quantity → noun (the most / the least / the fewest).
