Indefinite Articles (a / an)
1. What Are Indefinite Articles?
Indefinite articles are words we use to talk about one thing or person for the first time. We often use them:
- when we mention something for the first time,
- to describe jobs or professions,
- for general descriptions.
There are two indefinite articles:
- a → before words that begin with a consonant sound
- an → before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u)
2. Using “a”
Structure: a + singular noun
Examples:
- a dog
- a book
- a car
Sentences:
- I have a dog.
- It is a book.
- I want a car.
Tip: Only use a with singular nouns.

Sentences:
- I ate an apple.
- She has an umbrella.
- He bought an egg.
Tip: Use an when the noun starts with a vowel sound, not just a vowel letter.
- Correct: an hour (h is silent, so vowel sound)
- Incorrect: a hour
4. No Article
We do not use a / an in the following cases:
- General meaning (talking about things in general)
→ I like dogs.
→ She enjoys reading books.
→ She enjoys reading books.
- Meal times
→ We have breakfast at 8 a.m.
→ I like lunch with my friends.
→ I like lunch with my friends.
- Days, months, and years
→ She was born in July.
→ He arrived in 2023.
→ I have English class on Monday.
→ He arrived in 2023.
→ I have English class on Monday.
- Television, school subjects, or languages
→ I watch television in the evening.
→ He studies mathematics.
→ She speaks French.
→ He studies mathematics.
→ She speaks French.
- With “next” or “last”
→ I went to London last June.
→ We will visit them next week.
→ We will visit them next week.
5. Important Notes
- Use a / an only with singular nouns.
- Do not use a / an with plural nouns or uncountable nouns.
- When you talk about something for the first time, use a / an.
Examples:
- I saw a dog in the park. (first time)
- I like dogs. (general, no article)
- She is a teacher. (profession)
- He wants an orange. (first mention)
Key Points:
- a → consonant sound, singular nouns.
- an → vowel sound, singular nouns.
- No article for general meaning, meals, days, months, years, television, subjects, languages, and with last/next/this.
