Indefinite Articles (a / an)

1. What Are Indefinite Articles?
Indefinite articles are words we use to talk about one thing or person for the first time. We often use them:
  • when we mention something for the first time,
  • to describe jobs or professions,
  • for general descriptions.

There are two indefinite articles:
  • a → before words that begin with a consonant sound
  • an → before words that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u)

2. Using “a”
Structure: a + singular noun

Examples:
  • a dog
  • a book
  • a car

Sentences:
  • I have a dog.
  • It is a book.
  • I want a car.

Tip: Only use a with singular nouns.

3. Using “an”
Structure: an + singular noun

Examples:
  • an apple
  • an umbrella
  • an egg

Sentences:
  • I ate an apple.
  • She has an umbrella.
  • He bought an egg.

Tip: Use an when the noun starts with a vowel sound, not just a vowel letter.
  • Correct: an hour (h is silent, so vowel sound)
  • Incorrect: a hour

4. No Article
We do not use a / an in the following cases:

  • General meaning (talking about things in general)
 → I like dogs.

  • With “next” or “last”

→ We will visit them next week.

5. Important Notes
  • Use a / an only with singular nouns.
  • Do not use a / an with plural nouns or uncountable nouns.
  • When you talk about something for the first time, use a / an.

Examples:
