Past Simple (Irregular Verbs)

Remember
In the past simple:
  • regular verbs add -ed
  • irregular verbs do NOT follow a rule

You must learn them.

1. What Are Irregular Verbs?
Irregular verbs change form in the past.
They do not add -ed.

Example:
  • go → went
  • eat → ate

There is no spelling rule, so we learn them one by one.

2. Common Irregular Verbs
These are some of the most common irregular verbs:
  • be → was / were
  • begin → began
  • break → broke
  • bring → brought
  • build → built
  • buy → bought
  • catch → caught
  • choose → chose
  • come → came
  • do → did
  • drink → drank
  • eat → ate
  • fall → fell
  • feel → felt
  • find → found
  • get → got

  • tell → told

3. Positive Sentences (Irregular Verbs)
Structure:
Subject + past verb (irregular form)

Examples:
  • “I went home.”
  • “He/She/It went home.”
  • “You/we/they went home.”

  • “I ate lunch.”
  • “He/She/It ate lunch.”
  • “You/We/They ate lunch.”

The verb stays the same for all subjects.

4. Negative Sentences (Irregular Verbs)
Just like regular verbs, we use did not.

Structure:
Subject + did not + base verb

Important rule:
❗ Even with irregular verbs, the verb goes back to the base form.

Examples:
  • “I did not go out.”
  • “He/She/It did not go out.”
  • “You/We/They did not go out.”

5. Yes / No Questions (Irregular Verbs)
Structure:
Did + subject + base verb?

Examples:
  • “Did you go to school?”
  • “Did she eat breakfast?”
  • “Did they see the teacher?”

Short Answers:
  • “Yes, I/He/She/It/You/We/They did.”
  • “No, I/He/She/It/You/We/They didn’t.”

6. Time Words Often Used with Past Simple
  • yesterday
  • last night
  • last weekend
  • two days ago
  • in 2022
  • when I was a child

Examples:
  • “I went out last night.”
  • “She saw him yesterday.”

7. Easy Way to Remember
Regular verbs → add -ed
Irregular verbs → change form

But:
✔ Negatives and questions are the same for both:
did + base verb

Final Reminder
Ask yourself:

“Is the action finished?”

If yes → use past simple

Then ask:

“Is the verb regular or irregular?”
